Did you know that it is now possible to verify your apostille online?
Many countries around the world will recognise an apostille (see our previous article on the subject). This means that your documents should be stamped with an apostille if you are in Australia and you are sending them to any of those other countries. In Australia, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is authorised to issue the apostille.
Public or private documents
If your documents are public documents (normally being original Australian government documents such as birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates etc) you can obtain an apostille by sending them to a DFAT office located in each capital city. If you are overseas, you can send those public documents to any Australian foreign office to obtain an apostille. However, if your documents are private documents (normally being, documents you have created or signed, or copies of documents including Australian government documents) then your documents must be notarised before you can submit them to DFAT to obtain an apostille.
Notarising private documents
As a leading provider of notary public services to clients across Sydney, we can assist you with both notarising your documents as well as applying for and obtaining the apostille from DFAT. Our apostille service is an additional and optional service of convenience that we provide so that you do not need to trouble yourself with attending DFAT to apply for the apostille yourself.
DFAT will issue an apostille by attaching it to your documents after they have received your documents and cross checked their records for signatures and seals of the relevant government department or notary public. Once your document has been stamped with the apostille, you can then send your documents to the intended destination country – presumably having satisfied their official requirements.
Verifying the apostille
But how do you know or anyone overseas know that the apostille is legitimate? After all, it is extremely important that the apostille is real and can be verified. the apostille is what whoever is receiving you documents will rely on to ensure that the document or the information contained in the document is actually true or correct.
