Photographic identification documents and your personal information
You must be able to properly and satisfactorily identify yourself when you come to our office for notary public services. This means you must bring photographic identification documents such as a passport or an Australian drivers licence to your appointment. Foreign documents without supporting local or international identification documents will not be accepted. In addition to proving your identity, you must provide us with your personal information. We retain your personal information and a copy of your photographic identification document as a record of the notary public services provided to you at the time of your appointment. This record is necessary because we are sometimes asked to confirm and verify that we have notarised a document or that we had identified an individual.
Specific identification documents
If you need to sign a document and your signature must be witnessed by a notary public, your document might refer to a specific identification document (for example, a passport number or a local identification number) especially if it is going to a country that has a national identification system. Different countries have different requirements and so you need to be familiar with the requirements. Whatever the case may be, if your document refers to that specific identification document, then you must bring that identification document to your appointment. If you do not, you would need to reschedule your appointment or change the document to refer to some other identification document. There is always a risk that you will invalidate the document if you change it or rely on some other identification document.
Understand the requirements and follow the instructions
If in doubt, always seek guidance and advice from a lawyer in the intended destination country. Following instructions and satisfying the requirements for producing photographic identification documents or specific identification documents will help you avoid unnecessary delays and additional costs caused by invalid documents.
