‘Alarm bells should go off’: Puppy sale scams increase fourfold amid pandemic

It’s a shame that some people still see it as an opportunity to ‘scam’ other people. Selling puppies is such a lucrative business, why do they have to resort to criminality?

If you put two dogs together and give birth to a couple of puppies, market forces (ie, the demand) ensures that you can sell them (each of them) at a substantial profit. Since people are prepared to pay, let them pay – and it’s legal, it’s just the market, it’s just business.

Puppy prices have soared during the pandemic and so too have the number of scams targeting buyers, with the consumer watchdog reporting people have been swindled out of more than $1.6 million this year.
