Did you know about the latest changes at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)?
If you have not been to DFAT to have your documents stamped with an apostille or authentication within the last few months, then you should make a note of the recent changes to what you need to do and how much it costs to have your documents stamped with an apostille or authentication with DFAT.
- From 2 November 2016, all requests for apostille and authentication services from DFAT will be provided by appointment only. You can make an appointment by calling the Document Legalisation Information Service on 1300 935 260.The operator will ask you a series of questions about your document and the service that you require. You will be given an appointment time and confirmation details which you need to bring with you to the appointment. Documents are generally processed at the time or the day of your appointment.Previously, anyone who needed to have their documents stamped with an apostille or authentication would need to visit DFAT during their normal hours of 9am-1pm and stand in the queue, and DFAT would process documents within 3 business days. Later, DFAT started experimenting with same day over-the-counter services, again collecting documents in the morning but having those documents ready to collect later in the afternoon.
- From 1 January 2017, DFAT introduced a new ‘more simple’ schedule of fees for apostille and authentication services. Documents are now charged at $80 per apostille or authentication.Previously, the cost of the apostille or authentication depended on how many single sided documents needed to be stamped and whether the documents needed to be bound by DFAT. One single page documents for authentication was $20 per document and a bound document was $40 per document. One single page documents for apostille was $60 per document and a bound document was $80 per document. Now, regardless of pages or binding, DFAT will charge $80 per document for apostille or authentication.
